MITCHELL, SD (Mitchell Now) — A heat advisory is in effect for all of southeastern South Dakota until 9 p.m. on Friday.

The National Weather Service Sioux Falls office is warning about a combination of warm temperatures and high humidity that will make it feel like 101 degrees during the heat of the day. Heat-related illness is possible for anyone doing strenuous outdoor activity or for those living in a home or apartment without air conditioning.

Experts recommend drinking plenty of water and wearing light clothing. Work should be pushed to as late in the day as possible. Pets and children cannot be left alone in a vehicle, even if it is running, during errands. Always look into the back seat before getting out because forgetting about a child strapped into a rear car seat could prove fatal.

When it is 95 degrees outside, it takes only ten minutes for the inside of a vehicle to bake. It quickly feels like 114 degrees, and after another 20 minutes, or just a half-hour in total, the temperature inside the cabin hits 129 degrees.
