MITCHELL, SD (Mitchell Now) — A single vehicle accident involving a 2023 Dodge Durango that was towing a camper trailer shut down Interstate 90 in one direction on Friday afternoon near Mitchell.

All vehicles going east were detoured at Betts Road around the closure using Highway 16. The extra traffic began to back up at the intersection of Havens Avenue and Ohlman Street. Multiple Mitchell Police Department patrol cars were dispatched to the intersection to ensure the flow didn’t grind to a halt.

I-90 East was reopened at about 2:30 p.m., about 45 minutes after the crash. Westbound traffic was never affected by the disruption.

The South Dakota Highway Patrol says the accident happened roughly three miles west of Mitchell at marker 327. The driver, a 76-year-old from Fairfax, Iowa, was attempting to pass a semi when the trailer began to fishtail. The camper rolled onto its side and the Durango flipped onto its roof.

All four people inside had minor injuries. The driver and a 76-year-old woman in the front passenger seat, also from Fairfax, were taken to a local health center for treatment. A 46-year-old man from Cedar Rapids and a 14-year-old boy were treated at the scene.
