MITCHELL, SD (Mitchell Now) Mitchell law enforcement officials say we remain a safe place to live as South Dakota prepares to release its 2025 crime report. While total incident numbers can appear high due to Mitchell’s population size and thorough reporting practices, violent crime remains low, with most cases involving property offenses or drug-related activity. The Mitchell Republic notes that In 2024, Mitchell reported 598 total offenses, with property crimes such as larceny and burglary making up the majority. Police leaders say serious random violence is uncommon and that many violent incidents involve people who already know each other. They also note that a small percentage of repeat offenders account for much of local law-enforcement activity.
