MITCHELL, SD (Mitchell Now) — Mitchell Technical College is working to prepare the next generation of local business owners as Baby Boomers retire and longtime entrepreneurs step away from their businesses.

Instructor Ryan Van Zee said small towns like Mitchell depend on young entrepreneurs to step in and keep local economies strong. To help meet that need, Mitchell Tech’s entrepreneurship program focuses on practical skills for launching and sustaining businesses.

Now in its third year, the program teaches business planning, leadership, sales and project management. It is structured to accommodate both students and working adults who want to start or expand a business without leaving the community.

Classes are held two days a month, allowing participants to balance coursework with jobs, family responsibilities and existing business commitments.

Program leaders say the goal is to equip participants with real-world tools while encouraging them to remain rooted in Mitchell and the surrounding area, helping ensure local businesses continue to serve the community for years to come.
