MITCHELL, SD (Mitchell Now) — The City of Mitchell will begin curbside compost collection the week of March 30, 2026, for residents who have signed up for the service.

Compost containers will be picked up on the same day as regular garbage collection. City officials say containers must be placed at the curb and may only include compostable yard waste. Tree branches, garbage and garbage bags are not permitted in the containers.

The optional service is available for $4 per month, plus the cost of the container. Residents interested in enrolling can contact the City of Mitchell Street and Sanitation Department at 605-995-8465.

For additional information, residents can call the department directly or visit the city’s website at https://www.cityofmitchellsd.gov.
