MITCHELL, SD (Mitchell Now) — A Pierre man has been sentenced to federal prison after pleading guilty to escape from federal custody.

United States Attorney Ron Parsons announced that U.S. District Chief Judge Roberto A. Lange sentenced James Dubray, 22, to 12 months and one day in federal prison for the offense. Dubray was also ordered to pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund. The sentencing took place Dec. 15, 2025.

Dubray was indicted by a federal grand jury in May 2025 and pleaded guilty on Oct. 14, 2025.

According to court records, the conviction stems from an incident on May 5, 2025. At the time, Dubray was in the custody of the Federal Bureau of Prisons following a conviction for possession of a firearm by a prohibited person. He was serving part of that sentence at Dismas Charities Residential Reentry Center in Sioux Falls.

Authorities said Dubray escaped from the facility by leaving without authorization and failing to return as required.

The case was investigated by the United States Marshals Service and prosecuted by Supervisory Assistant U.S. Attorney Connie Larson.

Following the sentencing, Dubray was immediately remanded into the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service.
