MITCHELL, S.D. (MITCHELLNOW) With the new High Plains Processing soybean plant preparing to open south of Mitchell, officials are once again raising safety concerns about the busy Highway 37 intersection leading into the facility. Davison County Sheriff Steve Harr told commissioners a truck recently pulled out in front of a car carrying a mother and baby, forcing the driver to swerve into oncoming traffic. The plant expects up to 140 trucks a day, and nearly 450 a day during harvest season, sparking worries about high speeds, limited visibility, and risky passing on the two-lane highway. The Mitchell Republic reports that the South Dakota Department of Transportation is studying long-term fixes, but any major reconstruction could be a decade away.
