BROOKINGS, S.D. (MITCHELLNOW) South Dakota State University scientists have developed a new organic red food dye that could soon replace synthetic additives in candy and drinks. The dye is produced by growing microorganisms in bioreactors using sugar beet molasses and corn syrup, and it also contains vitamins and antioxidants. Researchers say the project could expand to other natural colors like blue, green, and yellow. With synthetic dyes expected to be banned nationwide by 2027, SDSU hopes the innovation will not only provide a healthier alternative but also attract new business and boost South Dakota’s economy.
