MITCHELL, SD (Mitchell Now) — Crews from the South Dakota Department of Corrections are assisting with storm damage cleanup efforts at Custer State Park following last week’s windstorm.

Secretary of Corrections Nick Lamb authorized the deployment of offenders and staff to help remove fallen trees and debris throughout the park.

On Dec. 20, 2025, a crew of 15 minimum-custody offenders and four staff members from the Rapid City Minimum Center were deployed to assist with cleanup efforts. A second crew, consisting of 11 minimum-custody offenders and four staff, was sent to the park on Dec. 22 to continue the work. Additional deployments may occur if conditions warrant.

“I witnessed the damage first-hand on Saturday, and it is extensive,” Lamb said. “Our crews have a big job ahead of them, but they are willing and able to assist and give back to society.”

The Department of Corrections has previously provided disaster assistance across South Dakota, including flood response in Hudson in July 2025, flooding in northeastern South Dakota in 2023, flooding in the southeastern part of the state in 2024, and cleanup efforts following the 2022 derecho.

Video and photos of the cleanup efforts are available through the Department of Corrections’ official social media and website. Images are credited courtesy of the South Dakota Department of Corrections.
