Thune Says Government Shutdown Nears End as Senate Moves Toward Reopening

MITCHELL, SD (Mitchell Now) — U.S. Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) said Thursday the end of the 41-day federal government shutdown is “in sight” as the Senate moves toward passing legislation to restore operations.

Speaking on the Senate floor, Thune said eight Democrats joined Republicans in supporting a procedural step to advance a funding bill that includes a “clean” continuing resolution through Jan. 30 and three bipartisan, full-year appropriations measures.

Those bills cover military construction and veterans’ affairs, agriculture, and legislative branch operations — funding that Thune said ensures continued support for programs such as SNAP, WIC, veterans’ services, and essential farm programs.

Thune emphasized the urgency of passing the package, noting that many federal workers have gone nearly six weeks without pay and that public services, including air travel and nutrition programs, are strained.

“I’m grateful that the end is in sight,” Thune said. “The American people have suffered for long enough. Let’s get this bill done and get the government open.”

The legislation is expected to move to the U.S. House of Representatives following Senate approval.
